The Loire gorges are not so well known, but they are no less magnificent. You can visit them by canoe from our campsite and see them in all their splendour. The rugged terrain is home to a variety of natural environments, where rocky spurs peek through wooded landscapes in an atmosphere softened by pools of water. On the ground or in the air, amphibians, insects, birds and small plants live side-by-side in the craggy rocks.
For a true gourmet experience, a visit to the Roannais region is an absolute must! The irresistible Roannais region itself is good enough to eat if not devour – just like its culinary specialities! Haute cuisine may not necessarily come with a Michelin star, but always with passion and a love of fine food.
Restaurants : With the Maison Troisgros leading the way (holder of three Michelin stars since 1968) followed closely by Le Prieuré in Ambierle (one star), the Roannais region is intensely proud of its culinary credentials. Wine: On a 20km-long hillside, the Côte Roannaise vineyards wind their way through rolling countryside and well-preserved heritage villages. Côte Roannaise wines have enjoyed AOC status [protected designation of origin] since 1994. Of good quality, these wines are predominantly grown in a manner that respects terroir, nature and the environment. There are around 200 hectares of vines, mostly Gamay. The vines face east, taking full advantage of the sun, and know how to adapt to the constraints of the climate which can be harsh. The grapes mostly produce red wine, wine of a fresh and drinkable nature and which is the perfect accompaniment for cured meats and cheese, while the slightly acidic rosé is a firm favourite at cocktail hour! Thirty or so independent winegrowers share the chiselled hillside of the Côte Roannaise and are happy to welcome you to their cellars where they will introduce you to their products and talk passionately about their work.
Specialities : What would the Roannais region be without its culinary specialities? On your travels, you will be able to taste the famous Praluline brioche, Révillon’s speciality chocolate papillotes, the waters of Saint-Alban, or the AOC wines of the Côte Roannaise produced by nearly forty winegrowers in unspoilt surroundings.
Our campsite is close to numerous heritage sites: The church and bell-tower of Saint André d’Apchon, the Cordeliers’ convent, various abbeys, the port at Bully, and the Prieuré de Pommiers.
